SUGAR SPRINGS DRIVE
SOPHISTICATED EXPANSION TO A COMPLEX BUILDING.
The current structure is characterized by its intricate roofline, featuring a variety of pitches, directions, and dormers that contribute to its distinctive volumetric qualities. This existing roof system is meticulously analyzed and incorporated into the design of the new addition, ensuring that the overall aesthetic is cohesive. The rooflines and pitches of the original building are extended, and a new dormer is added to further integrate the addition into the existing structure. The new addition is carefully positioned to the side of the original building, adjacent to the existing fireplace chimney that projects outward from the facade. This placement allows for a seamless blending of the new and old architectural elements, maintaining harmony across the facade’s movements.

Thoughtful Addition
The design carefully replicates the existing brick and siding materials on the facades of the addition in a strategic manner, reinforcing the continuity between the original structure and the new addition. The result is a building whose volumetric composition is so well-executed that it is nearly impossible to discern where the addition begins or ends, creating a sense of unity and cohesion throughout.
Functionally, the addition serves two distinct purposes, with each floor designed to meet the specific needs of the client. The addition does not provide internal access between the two levels, maintaining a separation of function. The ground floor is dedicated to the client’s office space, featuring three individual office rooms, a kitchenette, a bathroom, a pet pen, and a foyer area. A primary entrance at the front, along with a secondary entrance from the side of the original building, ensures easy access to this floor. The second floor, accessed through the master suite of the house, is designed as an expansive walk-in closet. This large space features an island with shelving on all four facades, providing ample storage. Despite the stark difference in function between the two floors, both levels are flooded with natural light thanks to a series of large 72-inch tall single-hung and fixed windows placed strategically in each room, ensuring that the spaces are airy, bright, and welcoming.
